This is an aggregate of public star counts, so it is reproducible by anyone with the same tool list - it is not proprietary data. It is published because a named, dated figure is directly quotable, whereas "sum up these 41 repositories" is not. Two repositories that fail to resolve are excluded and listed on the methodology page rather than counted as zero.
